The extreme limit of space weather events – observations and interrelations

The study summarizes the identification and mutual relationship between the upper limit of four types of space weather-related events: solar flares, coronal mass ejections, energetic protons and geomagnetic storms. Namely, the top 50 cases of each category are identified from the available databases, well-known to the space weather community. Association procedures are applied to inter-link the above solar activities and the magnetospheric disturbances. The study reveals that only a minority of a given extreme phenomena is associated to extreme members of the remaining ones, confirming the importance of the interplanetary medium while developing forecasting schemes. The results are presented and discussed.
