The academic system cannot offer staff scientist or tenure track positions to all PhDs that it produces. I will present some insights into a career that didn't end in academia, and into the important milestones along the way. There is a plethora of information on this subject on the web which I'll briefly summarize. More importantly, I will try to convey how it's possible to have a fulfilling career inside and outside of astronomy, and how there are many different factors that will affect your own measure of happiness (and that's what it's all about in the end, isn't it?).
