Magnetic cycles of stars

Sandra Jeffers
Georg-August Universitaet, Goettingen

The Sun exhibits well established 11-year spot cycle, and a 22-year magnetic cycle. One of the main diagnostics of cycles on the Sun and other solar-type stars is the S-index which is derived from Ca II H&K lines. Long-term monitoring of the S-index of large number of stars has shown a wealth of different cycle types, and we are now just beginning to understand how this links to the star's large-scale magnetic field geometry. In this invited talk, I will review what is known about the properties of the cyclic stellar activity and I will highlight a few cases we find surprising cyclic behaviour compared to the Sun.
