The origin of extragalactic magnetic fields, commonly observed in galaxies and clusters of galaxies, is presently unknown. While t the small-scale dynamo amplification mechanism can plausibly account for the observed properties of large-scale magnetic fields in the intracluster medium in low-z clusters of galaxies, the magnetic seeds from which dynamo could being are unknown. Presenting recent numerical simulations and radio observations on different scales, I will discuss the limits that we can already realistically put on the amplitude and time-evolution of cosmic seed magnetic fields.
